Wood: Mahogany, mahogany veneer, white pine, yellow poplar

Description
A solid mahogany top with a pine sub-frame is secured to the rails of
the case with screws set in gouged alcoves. The stiles are reeded in the
front and continue to the floor, forming the ring-turned and feet. The
reeding continues around all of the feet. The sides and back are
paneled. The pulls are original.

This chest exhibits a classical Philadelphia influence in it’s form,
proportions, and quality, The blocked and reeded stiles enhance the
projection of the cock-beaded bow-front drawers. The bead is repeated
at the bottom of the case. Richly figured woods, cross banding, and the
fully reeded back feet demonstrate the high quality of Haines’
cabinetmaking.

Ephraim Haines was born in Burlington, PA on October 23, 1775. He
apprenticed in 1791 to Daniel Trotter, Philadelphia cabinetmaker and
chair maker. A feature of Haines work is the swelled-bulb foot. In 1807,
he produced a set of chairs, a settee for Stephen Girards at a cost of
$500.
